Prayers for 13th July 2014

Lord of the world, we bring before you now the needs of your world, and the concerns of our hearts; we have watched horrible scenes on our TVs and in the press this week, and our hearts bleed – and your heart bleeds far more than ours.
We pray for those countries where peace and justice are threatened and diminished, and where violence and fear control the hearts and minds of citizens and subjects.  So we pray for peace between Israel and Palestine, between the factions in Iraq and Syria, and in other countries where men and women prefer to fight than to talk.
We pray for Christians who are persecuted for their faith, and particularly remember Nigeria and Pakistan.
We pray for those seeking peace between unreconciled peoples, for those who stand up for values of justice and equality, and those who care for the refugees
Lord in your mercy – hear our prayer
We pray for those countries where economic circumstances are leading to inequality and instability, where the rich and powerful are acting in self-interest while the poor and vulnerable are once again required to make the ‘necessary’ sacrifices.
As Christians, we commit ourselves to the ideal that, in the name of Christ, it does not have to be this way. And so we pray for those
who promote the kingdom values of equality, and care for the disadvantaged; for microfinance initiatives; for credit unions, cooperatives and friendly societies. We pray especially for the Food Bank in Exeter and Christians against Poverty in our city
Lord in your mercy – hear our prayer
We pray for those who lead our own country, for Queen Elizabeth and her family, for David Cameron, Nick Clegg, Ed Milliband in parliament, for Ben Bradshaw our MP.  May values of truth and honesty triumph, and not be lost to the values of spin and self-interest. We pray for those seeking to see our cities transformed, for street pastors walking the risky path of our night streets.
Lord in your mercy – hear our prayer
We pray for our church. Today we pray for Bishop Robert as he makes plans for the diocese; we pray for your wisdom to prevail at the General Synod this week.  We pray for our fellow Christians in our neighbourhood, Pinhoe Road Baptist Church, the Filipino church, that they and we may be shining lights in this part of Exeter as we follow our Lord and Saviour.
Lord in your mercy – hear our prayer
We thank you for the luxury of holidays, for refreshment and rest from work. We pray for those whose lives are made harder and busier by long summer breaks, and we pray for those without the luxury of a holiday.   We think of the damage our travel creates in our world, and we pray for motivation and help in tackling the climate chaos now beginning to engulf the planet. We pray for health, for all whose holiday is an escape from over-busy or unfulfilled lives. We pray for justice and fairness for those in our world who scratch a living from the tourist industry. Lord God, whether or not we travel from our homes this summer, please change us so that all our days may become holy days, to the glory of your name.
Lord in your mercy – hear our prayer
We pray, finally, for ourselves. May we become those with the imagination to see the world differently. May we become those whose sense of our own value has been transformed. May we become those who are no longer paralysed by the scale of the problems before us, may we be no longer diminished by our sense of our own smallness. May our lives be transformed by the kingdom taking root in and through us. May we become those who take our place and play our part in the transformation and salvation of the world.
We share in the joy of the boys being baptised today, and in the joy of those renewing their vows and we ask a Father’s blessing on them and their families
And we pray for those in need remembering
Merciful Father

Prayers for 28th September 2014

Let us pray for the church and for the world.

Heavenly Father, in this week of tensions in politics in your world, we pray for those in authority throughout the world.
Father, you know all about the events that have filled our newspapers and TV screens.  We especially bring our country to you, and particularly those with responsibility—our royal family, the parties of government and opposition, and all who make decisions which affect the citizens of this country.
We pray that you will give wisdom to the government’s military advisers about dealing with terrorism, especially in Iraq.  We pray for wisdom in international relations between the countries which are seen as being “Christian” and others.
We pray for godly and just laws, particularly regarding those who are on benefits, those seeking asylum, those who are immigrants.
And we pray especially for our local schools as children from many backgrounds learn together, for those who teach and those who work behind the scenes.
In all these things, we pray that this land may know the joy of authority which is rooted in your will and your ways.

Lord of the church, we pray for the church in the city and diocese.
We ask for an outpouring of your Holy Spirit on those who are being ordained as priests across the diocese today, especially remembering ....
We ask you to guide and encourage Bishop Robert as he meets people across the diocese, and as he both serves and leads your people in Devon

Loving Lord, we pray for the sick among this congregation, and among our families and friends.
We remember people that we know, and especially
As we remember their names, Lord, we bring them one by one to your throne, and commit them to your care, as the one who understands our lives and bodies far better than any doctor or nurse.  For each one, Lord, we ask that they may know that they are loved by you, and are in your perfect care.  As we pray for the sick, we pray for friends and family who are anxious, and we ask that you will be their comforter and encourager through days and nights of sadness and concern.
We thank you Lord, for the medical services around us, and we pray that you will guide those who have been called to research into the causes and treatment of illness; that their work may be of benefit to the world that you have made.

Lord, we look outward to your world, and pray for your compassion on all those who are caught up in the Ebola outbreak in west Africa; we pray for those with the disease, that they may find help; we pray for those who mourn the loss of a loved one, that they may be comforted; we ask for wisdom for those who are treating the sick and looking for a cure.
And we pray for those communities and individuals who suffer the scourge of HIV/AIDS, and cry to you for those who have become orphans as a consequence, and for churches which provide care.

We pray for our CMS link missionary, asking that the Holy Spirit will empower her work with grace and wisdom

Lord, we seek your blessing on the young baby as he is baptised today, that he may grow to love and serve and follow you.  We pray for a blessing on his family and their friends.

Finally, we pray for ourselves this week.
Lord, your way may be costly for us this week—but to whom else could we go?
For you alone have the words of eternal life,
and we pray that we may walk in your way, with you beside us, taking delight in your word—every day this week
May our lives be lived every hour of every day to your honour and glory
